James K. Melia

Principal

James Melia’s healthcare experience includes more than 35 years in medical equipment planning and project management for healthcare construction.  His background includes a diversity of projects including academic medical centers, children’s hospitals, ambulatory care centers and various community hospital projects.

Mr. Melia’s diversified experience includes the following:

  • Medical equipment planning and project management for over 275 projects
  • Extensive planning experience in all areas including medical imaging, clinical labs, radiation therapy, surgical services, trauma, and emergency services and virtually all other inpatient and outpatient health related services

  • Capital budget management for a five hospital system totaling $28M in annual expenditures
  • Comprehensive equipment planning for a 2.1M sf urban replacement hospital
  • Extensive experience with occupancy and equipment installation planning for multiple projects
  • Facilities management experience for a major medical center

  • Oversees BIM coordination with architects, engineers, and medical equipment placement teams.

Prior to the Walsh Consulting Group, Mr. Melia was a senior medical equipment planning consultant with the Herman Smith division of Coopers & Lybrand. In addition to his consulting career, Jim served as the Administrative Director of Facilities Management and the Director of Capital Planning for the Orlando Regional Healthcare System.

Mr. Melia has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal regarding increasing capital costs for medical technology and recently presented to the Central Florida Healthcare Executives on Trends in Medical Technology.
